Movies What That I Like

By , March 29, 2004

For no good reason I sat and listed the 85 films I like best of all the films I’ve seen. Then I pared the list down to 40. Then I ranked them. This is what I came up with:

01 The Seven Samurai
02 Pulp Fiction
03 North by Northwest
04 Trainspotting
05 The Lady Eve
06 The Sting
07 The Shawshank Redemption
08 The Philadelphia Story
09 The Hudsucker Proxy
10 O Brother, Where Art Thou?
11 Die Hard
12 Unforgiven
13 The Maltese Falcon
14 The Matrix
15 Jackie Brown
16 Gross Pointe Blank
17 Christmas in July
18 Predator
19 Ed Wood
20 The Seventh Seal
21 The City of Lost Children
22 Goodfellas
23 True Romance
24 Amélie
25 The Man Who Knew Too Much
26 Hail the Conquering Hero
27 Auntie Mame

33 Touch of Evil
34 Casablanca
35 A Day at the Races
36 Office Space

  4. Bamber says:

Geez, I’ve only seen about five of the flicks on your list. I really can’t pick a favorite or even a few favorites…

  5. Anonymous says:

the original star wars flicks, kill bill, jfk, serendipity, the indy flicks, and many, many more…

  6. Krn_QT_1oo4 says:

  7. CHiTaLiaNO says:

Pulp Fiction…I heard a lot about it…but i never had a chance to see it…*gasp*, I am such a poor, deprived little child, right?…Hhaha, yea.

  8. My Disaster says:

I spent two weeks laying on the beach in the south of CA. Its nice, Ill agree. As is Oregon, though. But the rainy season makes you appreciate it more.

  9. Peasprout says:

@My Disaster, I camped once. In Tulelake. Closest to Oregon I ever got. Rain falls here at times. Do you live near Medford? I have heard of a city called Medford.

  10. My Disaster says:

@Peasprout, I live in corvallis- about four hours north of medford (medford is really close to CA) but normally I live by Portland- the only important city in oregon basically.

  11. potiron says:

Shawshank and Amelie at this point.

I joined Netflix this week so I could make my way through the AFI list.

    I’m so pumped.

And apparently a loser. All I want to do is sit at home and watch “the greatest films of all time?”

  12. ANNA 28 says:

oh goodness. i’m horrible with movies. but i’ll pick out my favorites from your list…

    8, 12, 31 ,24

    great site here!

  13. Keats says:

Nice list. Everyone should have, at the least, a top ten. Have you read High Fidelity?

  14. Harry Potter and LOTR!

  15. Peasprout says:

@Keats, I have not read High Fidelity, thought it’s on my mental list of books to read. I enjoyed the film version.

I would only go up into the hills to look down on L.A. if I could look down on L.A. in the 1940s or so. It’s far too depressing to me to see what’s been done to that once wonderful city.

As for the unfortunate Mr. Sartoris– sad to hear of his downfall. I too have seen friends fall so far due to drug addiction, and it is a powerless feeling.

  16. LeoStar23 says:

    1. House of Wax (But, the remake might make me want to kill myself)

    2. Kissing Jessica Stein

    3. Man Bites Dog

    Watch them.

  17. Keats says:

    @Peasprout, I’ve always liked Notorious.

  18. Peasprout says:

@Peasprout, Notorious would be high up on my list too, but not in the top 40 it seems. Hard to say for sure. I could probably change it up a bit and be just as happy with it. This really is not as definitive list as I’d hoped it to be.

  19. wingb34 says:

Do you like independent films? Or only oldies?

ryc: I just have super sensitive dry skin, so sad…I hope the doctor can fix me someday…=(

  20. I watched Blues Brothers on VH1 the other night. I’ve seen it several times before, but I still laugh at the movie. Its so awesome.

  21. The nine not yet watched:

    09 The Hudsucker Proxy
    15 Jackie Brown
    16 Gross Pointe Blank
    18 Predator
    19 Ed Wood
    28 Murder, My Sweet
    29 Midnight Run
    36 Office Space
    40 This Gun For Hire

  22. Tiger Milk says:

Not ranked, but 10 of my favorites:

    The Apartment
    Umbrellas of Cherbourg
    8 1/2
    The Graduate
    Annie Hall
    Harold and Maude
    All About My Mother
    Vertigo
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Lessons of Darkness

Curious if your list changed at all since then.

  23. Peasprout says:

@Tiger Milk, There are some films that have been released since I made it that I would likely add to the list, as well as some that I simply forgot to include, most notably “I Married a Witch,” which would likely be among the top 15 or 20. If I set my mind to it I could come up with some recent films that I’d add to the list. “Inglourious Basterds” comes to mind immediately, as does “Darjeeling Limited,” which makes me realize I failed to include another favorite on this list, “Rushmore.”

  24. Peasprout says:

@Veronica Lake, You know what movie I forgot to add when I made the list back when? Donnie Darko. I was thinking in my head today of my favest ever movies and that is totally one of them. So you need to imagine that I Married a Witch and Donnie Darko are both on here. But not the Director’s Cut of DD. That was Donnie Darko 4 Dummiez.
